Art Bridging the Avenues (2003-04)
In 2003 I was awarded an artist project grant titled "Art Bridging the Avenues". The grant was a collaborative civic art installation with artist Charles Collette funded by the Cultural Arts Council of Houston and Harris County (CACHH). The artist project was a lantern sculpture entitled "Luminario". Constructed of steel framing and colored panels of lexan and ink on mylar, the sculpture will be installed at the 1300 block of Houston Avenue at a railroad overpass that serves as an entrance to the First and Fourth Ward districts of Houston. The community service portion of this grant afforded First and Fourth Ward teens an opportunity to study with four artists for the month of June and tour the James Rosenquist exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts. The "Creative Thinking in Art" workshop ended with a collaborative artist and teen project of mosaic tile panels. In December 2003 panels were installed on the Houston Avenue Overpass by friends and community.
